The PHASE II ultrasonic portable hardness testers are capable of measuring the surface hardness of a broad variety of metals on flat, round, thin or large surfaces. Unlike the standard Dynamic hardness testers, these “state-of-the-art” portable hardness testers incorporate “Ultrasonic UCI” technology, which enables the hardness testing of very thin and small workpieces, which otherwise could not be tested accurately using a portable device. Non-destructive in it’s function, these hardness testers allow for the testing of highly sensitive or finished parts that previously could not be tested in an operational setting. The non-destructive (ndt) feature of these hardness testers allow the operator to accurately test parts without causing physical or structural damage that would normally lead to disposal or refinish of operators part. That translates into less scrap parts/ lower mfg costs due to necessary inspections.

PHASE II offers two models of ultrasonic hardness testers that are capable of measuring the surface hardness of a broad variety of metals on flat, round, thin or large surfaces. Accurate measurements of steel, cast steel, alloy steel, aluminum, brass, bronze and copper are easily attained with this compact instrument.

The MET-U1A/U1A50 meets ASTM A1038-10 specifications.

UCI Portable Hardness Testing Method:

Ultrasonic Contact Impedance is a hardness testing method based on the measurement of the frequency shift of a resonating rod caused by the essentially elastic nature of the finite area of contact between the indenter and the test piece during the penetration. Described as a hardness testing practice using a calibrated instrument by pressing a resonating rod with a Vickers style Diamond indentor with a fixed force against the surface of the part to be tested.

Shear Pin Brinell

The accuracy and the consistency of the STE hardness tester is due to the original principle of the loading  system.

The applied force causes penetration of the indenter into the surface with a load determinated by the calibrated pin, which breaks at 1580 kp.

The value of Brinell hardness is obtained by reading the diameter of indentation on readout charts which assure proper correlation between load applied and impression diameter, and are provided with each bag of pins.

FIBER OPTIC BACKLIGHTS
The lighting method producing a sharp, high contrast silhouette of an object is known as backlighting.
With machine vision inspection applications, the camera white balance is adjusted to record the illuminated plate correctly, so that any object placed in front of the backlight appears dark and a useful silhouette is created.

However, because light output is very diffused, backlights can also be used for highly specular specimens in transmitted or incident light microscopy.
Meiji Techno carries three sizes of backlights with the following features::

  • Intense, uniform output to insure consistency and optimal performance.
  • The standard bundle length is 36 inches (914mm).
  • Because the fibers are glass, the input can withstand the heat (and light energy) that can melt other plastic fiber products.
  • Meiji Techno Backlights can also be used with most available strobe light sources.
  • Fixture holes in the all aluminum, black anodized body are deisigned for easy mounting
  • The stainless steel input adapter is swaged on stainless steel sheathing for extra durability and long life.
  • Housing thickness is less than 1 inch (25mm).

GUIDELINES FOR MACHINE VISION
Use an active area just large enough to silhouette the product. If the backlit area is too large, diffused light from adjacent areas will create flare and blur the edge, making measurement of the silhouette difficult. If the backlight is too large, use an opaque mask to reduce flaring. If further refinement of the image is required, increase the distance of the mask and the product from the backlight. This has a “collimating” effect which should also improve image quality. It reduces the effective size of the backlight which can work either for you or against you.Note: The standard diffuser plates are made of acrylic plastic so if your application involves temperatures above 70°C, let us know your requirement.
